West German and German Mid-Century pottery is a highly exciting area of ceramics to collect, as there are so many wonderful examples available for collectors, with wonderful glazes, colourways and techniques.

The backstamps are fun to decipher, but are very logical, with the last one or two digits of the numbering system referring to the height of the piece in centimetres. The other numbers will identify the manufacturer and the shape of the piece.

Those marked GERMANY on the underside date generally to pre-1949.

Those marked WEST GERMANY OR W. GERMANY date to between 1949 to 1990.

Those marked FOREIGN, or overstamped with FOREIGN, are generally post 1949 but mid-century West German pieces for export to countries like Hungary or Bulgaria, marked as such because Western goods were not taken very well behind the Iron Curtain!

To further complicate the matter, the same shaped piece, from the same manufacturer, with the same impressed number on the reverse, can have examples with all three backstamps, GERMANY, WEST GERMANY and FOREIGN, depending on the age of the piece, as the production of these pieces spanned the formation of West Germany and the iron curtain!!

This selection compromises the following pieces:

The Trumpet Bell Shaped Vase in Burgundy and Cream Drip Glaze with Rose Gold Gilt:
Maker: Bay Keramiks
Date: Circa 1940’s
Base: GERMANY 203/14
Height: 14cm
Condition: Excellent, with only very minor rubbing to the rose gold gilt, on the rim.
Notes: These sell for between €20 and €40 online, depending on the glaze pattern/colourway.

The Cream, Burgundy, Grey and Brown Drip Glaze, Urn Shaped Vase, with Rose Gold Gilt:
Maker: BAY Keramiks
Date: Circa 1940’s
Base: GERMANY 535/17
Height: 17cm
Condition: Excellent, with just one spot of gilt missing from the rim.
Notes: These sell for between €50 and €60 online, depending on the glaze pattern/colourway.

The Small Pitcher/Jug Speckled Drip Glazed Vase with Repaired Rope Handle:
Maker: Scheurich Keramiks
Date: Circa 1950’s
Base: Printed FOREIGN, over glaze flooded GERMANY and Number ( 328/12)
Height: 11.5cm
Condition: Fair, as it has an unfortunate amateur repair to the handle as photographed, but excellent apart from that.
Note: I display the handle towards the back so then the repair is hidden!

Price is for all three vases as a curated collection. Buying them separately would be more expensive. More of the value is in the first two pieces due to the condition, glaze rarity and size.
