Vintage Retro Mid Century Modern Atomic Design Chance Brothers Fiestaware Three Section Rectangular Serving Plate Plus Two Small Rectangular Dishes with Gilt Edging in the Very Rare Night Sky Pattern from 1957
I'm making progress with downsizing, but more items need to go! I have so many glass vases and retro glass items, and to keep them all is not possible – think of the packing for our house move when the time comes!
For sale here is a Vintage Retro Mid Century Modern Atomic Design Chance Brothers Fiestaware Three Section Rectangular Serving Plate Plus Two Small Rectangular Dishes with Gilt Edging in the Very Rare “Night Sky” Pattern from 1957.
Robert Lucas Chance bought the British Crown Glass Company in 1924. He was joined by his brother William Chance in 1932, and from then on, the factory became known as Chance Brothers. In 1945 the company was taken over by Pilkington glass. Popular designs from the Chance Brothers include the Spiderweb range by Robert Goodden, The Handkerchief range and the Fiestaware range.
Fiestaware was Chance's most successful creation which was produced from 1950 until 1981: mass-produced glassware for the domestic market that stood the test of time over a period of thirty years. This glassware was produced flat-rolled sheet glass with decorative screen- and transfer-prints applied prior to it being formed to shape, by reheating and slumping.
Their most popular creations were from the 'Fiestaware' range that eminent designers like Michael Harris and Margaret Casson helped create, with the most popular designs being Swirl (1955), Calypto (1959, Harris) and Lace.
Designed by Lady Margaret Casson in 1957, the 'Night Sky' pattern remains one of the rarest and hardest to find, that was made by Chance Brothers Glass. It has a kinship with the contemporary designs for the 1951 Festival of Britain, and Atomic/Space age influences.
This fabulous set of three items are in this super-rare 1957 pattern.
The serving plate and the two small dishes are in very good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks, and with the transfer print fully intact, but there is age-related rubbing to the gilt edging.
The Three Section Rectangular Serving Plate measures approx. 13 inches/ 33 cm by is 5.5 inches/ 14 cm. The two small rectangular dishes measure 5.5 inches/ 14 cm by 4.5 inches/ 11.5 cm
Price is for all three items together as a collection, and well priced when compared with online examples of this pattern,
I have a few other Chance Bros glass items which will be listed shortly, see the final photos.
