Vintage Blue and White Dinner Plate Unmarked but in the Lovely "Stratford Blue" Pattern, by Masons Ironstone, Perfect for Display on a Wall of Blue and White Plates
A possible impending house move has forced me into evaluating all my collections and some items will have to go, in my effort to downsize, including this Stunning Blue and White Plate.
I have quite the selection of individual decorative Blue and White plates and platters and serving items which I have collected over the years with the idea of having a mad wall display, but never quite got round to it, and I have too many to display elsewhere.
I'll be selling them in sets and individually, so keep an eye out on my upcoming ads...
For Sale here is A Vintage Blue and White Dinner Plate Unmarked but in the Lovely Stratford Blue Pattern, by Masons Ironstone, Perfect for Display on a Wall of Blue and White Plates
The “Stratford Blue” Pattern, is Mason’s version of the Asiatic Pheasants pattern and as it’s name suggests, shows Chinese influence, the central motif features exotic blooms birds and foliage in the Chinese style, and the edge of the plate has a wide band of smaller floral motifs and bird motifs interspersed with a lattice repeat pattern. The edge is gently scalloped. The Plate is Blue and White, with the blue being a paler shade that normal (and hence probably a second and not backstamped for this reason).
Mason’s were a family of potters trading from circa 1800 to circa 1854, where they were taken over by Messrs. G L Ashworth & Bros in 1861 (they continued to use the Mason’s printed marks and also their molds and patterns). It became part of the Wedgwood group in 1978 and continued until production ceased in 1997.
Charles James Mason patented Ironstone in 1813, making the company a fortune. Ironstone was developed as a cheaper, mass-produced and more durable alternative to porcelain.
This Dinner plate measures just under 10 inches/ 25.5 cm and is in excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks or pattern loss. There may be some very minor age-related crazing present.
There is no back stamp present, probably due to the fact that the plate is a second, due to the lighter blue shade, when compared with my other Masons Stratford plates.
They were purchased together (in an antique shop) so pretty sure it’s Masons, like the others, and the only issue being the paler blue colour. See the photos of the two together, showing the Masons backstamp on the smaller breakfast plate. As a single plate for a wall display or a max and match set, this lack of a backstamp/ paler colour, hardly matters.
Perfect for display on a kitchen dresser or as part of a wall of plates display. Would look great on display in a food establishment also, such as a café, coffee shop, bistro or restaurant.
Also perfect for special occasion use, or daily use. Would be fabulous when mixed and matched with other Blue and White Ware to make up a mix and match dinner service.
I will also have a matching breakfast plate available, three available (see the last photo for the two hanging together), and a matching side plate, so keep an eye out on my upcoming ads!
Check out my other ads as I have loads more Blue and White and Willow for sale at the moment as my collection has once again outgrown my space and I need to downsize before moving.
