Stunning Vintage Copeland Spode Blue and White Small Octagonal Bowl and Small Dodecagonal Jug in the Fabulous Italian Pattern, Pre 1970 Backstamps, Very Rare Items, Circa 1920/30s
For sale here is a pair of very Rare Copeland Spode Italian items.
One is a Small Octagonal (8-sided) Footed Bowl, with the Italian pattern on both the outside and the inside, suitable for use as a small sugar bowl. I cannot discover it actual use, as it’s a rare item to find for sale.
The second item is a Small Dodecagonal (12-sided) jug or sauce boat. Again, a very rare pattern shape that I cannot find an example online currently.
Both are from the Quality Pottery Firm Copeland Spode in the Very Popular and Collectable “Italian” Pattern. This is Spode’s most famous and enduring pattern and was first produced in 1816 and continued in production until 2009.
The backstamp on these examples is the Pre 1970 stamp which says Copeland Spode’s, Italian, England. The bowl also has the impressed Copeland Mark with Crown. The jug doesn’t have the impressed mark, as these were not placed on cups and jugs. These items, while being pre 1970, are actually, probably quite a bit earlier, most likely 1920/30’s, due to the style/shape of the pieces, and the quality of the transfer. Both very rare pieces, so it has been hard to confirm.
Spode was founded by Josiah Spode in 1770, and he is credited with perfecting the technique of transfer printing in underglaze blue on fine earthenware. Josiah Spode is also often credited with developing in 1790, the fine bone china formula that was generally adopted by the industry.
The Italian Pattern is one of Spode’s most famous and enduring pattern, having been introduced in circa 1816 and in continuous production until the Spode factory closed in 2009. The design was immediately popular and remained a best seller over the years. It was produced on a large variety of pieces, with a catalogue from the 1920’s/30’s recording over 700 different shapes available.
The design features a central motif of an Italian inspired landscape with a river running through the centre and various buildings and ruins, some animals (sheep?) and a few figures. The exterior and the interior edge of the jug has a beautiful decorative and ornate border of flowers and scrolls.
The Small Octagonal (8-sided) Footed Bowl is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or pattern loss, it’s in mint condition, and has only ever been on display during my ownership. It stands just under 1.5 inches/ 4.5 cm tall and measures 4.25 inches/ 11 cm in diameter.
The Small Dodecagonal (12-sided) jug or sauce boat is in very good vintage condition, but has one small chip under the spout. As photographed. It stands just over 3 inches/ 8 cm tall and measures approximately 4 inches/ 10 cm in diameter, from spout to handle.
Selling as a pair, as I have always had them displayed together. (Individually, they would work out more expensive)
These are quality items and Spode items command a premium price, so I am not entertaining any low ball offers on this jug and bowl, which are very well priced, especially given the rarity of these shapes.
I will have other pieces of Spode Italian Blue and White available shortly, so keep an eye out.
