A possible impending house move has forced me into evaluating all the contents of my attic and some items will have to go, in my effort to downsize. I'm making progress but more random items need to go!
For sale here is a Stunning Piece of Mid Century 1950/60’s Vallauris Pottery in a Wonderful Majolica/Fat Lava Type Glaze in Shades of Turquoise and Brown and in the Form of a Six Petalled Flower, Vintage Retro Kitsch Chic!!
This is a just fabulous example of the highly collectable Vallauris Tourist Ware from the 1950’s and 60’s, and in quite a rare colourway. Reds, oranges and greens are the more common glaze colours, and leaf and petal/flower forms were very popular.
Vallauris Golfe Juan is a tourist town of the French Riviera near Antibes known as the "city of 100 potters". The name (Valauria in Provencal) means "the golden valley".
In the beautiful colourful streets with balconies full of flowers bathed in the sun, Vallauris possesses an unparalleled treasure in France: the art of pottery, a craftsmanship that has been passed on for centuries.
The arrival of Picasso in the 1950s elevated Vallauris to the rank of ceramics capital, because soon many other artists also wanted to play with fire. Picasso himself, but also Chagall or Miró have designed ranges of pottery here, which opened up a new era for ceramics.
The 1950’s and 1960’s were the hayday for Vallauris Tourist-ware production, and who didn’t want to take home a piece of this pottery to remind them of the French Riviera.
This six-petalled open flower dish measures about 9 inches/23 cm in diameter and stands about 2.5 inches/6.5 cm tall. It is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or any damage to the extremities.
This piece has no Vallauris impressed stamp on the base, not one that I could find anyway, (but many pieces didn’t, some just having a sticker instead, which is long gone!) But the mould shape and the amazing glaze both scream Vallauris.
The piece is an item of Tourist Ware for the town of St. Jean de Mont, the name being written in gilt on one petal.
A fabulous addition to a Vallauris collection, especially in this fabulous colourway!
Lovely just as a display dish but can be used to serve olives or nuts at a vintage retro dinner party or buffet!
