Stunning Large and Heavy Irish Studio Pottery Hand-Potted and Hand-Painted Cheese Dome and Underplate By Ballydougan Pottery, Armagh, Northern Ireland, Apple Pattern, Excellent Condition
I am continuing my effort to downsize as unfortunately we will have to move all our belongings into temporary storage due to builders carrying out major remediation works to our brand new home.
I’m trying to minimize the pain by reducing the amount of packing required to be done!
I’ve quite a few eclectic items of décor which I am currently displaying, and using and they bring me joy, but as everything has to go back into storage again, some things needs to go!!!
Latest on the chopping block are some Irish Pottery items by different makers.
For sale here is a Stunning Large and Heavy Irish Studio Pottery Hand-Potted and Hand-Painted Cheese Dome and Underplate By Ballydougan Pottery, Armagh, Northern Ireland, Apple Pattern, Excellent Condition
This is a fabulous example of Irish Studio Pottery, and a whopper of a Cheese Dome, large and very heavy! It can holds a few cheeses, rather than just one, (see the photos!) and makes a fabulous display if having a cheese and wine session or a cheeseboard after a dinner party!
It’s hand-potted in a cream/beige earthenware and them decorated with hand painted apples and foliage. It has an applied cartouche saying “Cheese”. Underneath it is inscribed with the Ballydougan name.
The glossy glaze on the dome and at the centre of the underplate enhances the rich apple motifs, painted in reds and greens with green foliage. The brushwork is expressive and individual, giving each apple subtle variation. The edge of the dome and the edge of the underplate are unglazed, so that it fits better and doesn’t slide around.
They were made using traditional ceramic techniques and embody the character of Irish studio pottery. Their design is rooted in local craft heritage, which makes them a charming addition to a rustic or cottage style kitchen.
It's in excellent vintage condition with no chips cracks or any other damage. It is 11 inches/ 28 cm in diameter and stands approximately 7 inches/17 cm tall.
Ballydougan Pottery is an award winning studio based at historic Bloomvale House in Portadown, County Armagh, a site with craft roots dating back to 1785. It was developed by master potter Sean O’Dowd and his wife Susan O'Dowd in 1984, and blends traditional hand throwing with contemporary design.
Each piece is made and decorated by skilled artisans, continuing a long-standing Irish tradition of beautifully crafted ceramics and studio art pottery.
