Stunning Antique Japanese Porcelain Teapot by the Fukagawa Seiji Company, With the Mt. Fuji and Stream Backstamp Circa 1890-1910 - Replacement Lid
A possible impending house move has forced me into evaluating all the contents of my home and some items will have to go, in my effort to downsize. I'm making progress but more items need to go! I have so many teapots and I cannot keep them all. I have waaay too many and I will only be keeping a few!
For sale here I have a Stunning Antique Japanese Porcelain Teapot by the Fukagawa Seiji Company, With the Mt. Fuji and Stream Backstamp Dating it to Circa 1890-1910 - Replacement Lid
This is a truly stunning teapot from a very renowned Japanese maker, with a very fine all over design of stylised blue iris flowers and foliage in ombre shades of indigo blue, on a dark blue background with a fine gilt all-over design. The handle and spout are white and would originally have had extensive gilt patterning but most of this has worn way, just leaving trace amounts. Apart from this, the teapot itself is in excellent antique condition especially considering it dates to between 1890 and 1910, making it truly an Antique, over 100 years old. The lid is a replacement lid, as I purchased the teapot lidless. It fits well, colour and size wise, but obviously has been taken into account when pricing.
The Fukagawa Seiji company was founded by Fukagawa Chuji (1871-1934) who was the second oldest son of Fukagawa Eizaemon. The company exported a porcelain ware to Europe and America that was highly prized through the world fairs.
The Mt. Fuji and a Stream icon is the early backstamp mark of the Fukagawa Seiji company, which the blog-spot for Modern Japanese Pottery and Porcelain Marks indicates was used from the 1890s to the 1910s. Fukagawa established its base at Mikawachi, the old Hirado kiln site, after the 1868 Meiji Rebellion.
The porcelain wares from this company are very rare and very prized, and I include an idea of the price they make, in the last couple of photos. €3,500 for a complete teaset including a similar designed teapot to that I am selling here.
My price, although may appear steep to some, is actually very good value, given the example above, and the age, (well over 100 years old) rarity and quality of this piece, but I just have to make space.
Perfect for use, or display, it would make a really special present for the collector of teapots or Japanese porcelain.
