Original Peter Meanley Post-Modern Geometric studio ceramic bowl
Rare example of the sublime work of local ceramicist, Peter Meanley.
This superb Peter Meanley was born in 1944 and studied at York School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art in London. He has exhibited widely and taught for many years at the University of Ulster in Belfast.
Peter now predominantly makes salt glazed pouring vessels and recent work has included Bellarmine Jugs and large scale Toby Jugs. This early, hand thrown, stoneware bowl is a rare piece. Skilfully crafted, this oversized footed bowl has been drawn with concave edges and has been slip finished to the inside. The bowl stands at 11cm in height and has a diameter of 38cm.
This stunning, early example of Peter’s sublime pottery is classic 1980s, featuring an Esher-style, geometric pattern. The hand painting design, in pale yellow, pale blue, indigo and grey, contrasts beautifully with the charcoal, salt glaze exterior of the bowl.
In 1999, Peter was awarded a PHD for research in saltglazing. In 2007 he was one of the craftspeople representing Northern Ireland at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC.
Exhibiting since the early 2000s, Peter’s work has been seen across the UK and Ireland, in Germany, the Netherlands, the USA and Norway. His fine work is also included in collections in Italy, Spain and New Zealand and is featured in museums across the UK, including the Ulster Museum and the Victoria & Albert in London.
