Description
An exceptional and rare masterwork of mid-century Irish studio pottery, hand-crafted by Ned Walsh, the pioneering founder of Rossa Pottery (established 1962). Departing entirely from the workshop’s traditional commercial functional wares, this monumental presentation platter serves as an expressive piece of studio art.
The well of the plate features an integrated, high-relief three-dimensional sculpture of a stylized human or mythological face looking upward. The sculpture emerges organically from a heavily textured, cratered volcanic base. The piece is finished in a dramatic, complex combination of thick, fluid pooling glazes—featuring deep moss greens, volcanic browns, and metallic dark tones over a marbled burgundy and white enameled field.

The unglazed, red terracotta underside is highly detailed and fully authenticated with incised markings executed by the master potter prior to firing:
Sgraffito Artwork: A finely etched, stylized landscape illustration depicting the iconic historical skyline of the Rock of Cashel, including the round tower and cathedral ruins.
Location Inscription: Incised script reading "Rossa Cashel Tipperary".
