Japanese Awaji dragon vases Meji period

Japanese Awaji dragon vases Meji period Japanese Awaji dragon vases Meji period Ceramics

Beautiful pair of Awaji pottery vases.

Awaji pottery, produced on Awaji Island in Japan from the 1830s onward, is celebrated for its bold glazes and innovative designs. Known for their vivid monochrome finishes and intricate details, these ceramics often drew on Japanese mythology and natural motifs. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), Awaji pottery gained international acclaim and influenced Western decorative movements, including the Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau, with its striking forms and techniques.

The vases feature a distinctive turquoise blue crackle glaze with darker blue streaks and a three-clawed dragon coiled around the neck.

They are designed as double-gourd or baluster-shaped vessels.

Awaji ware is known for its vibrant, near-primary color glazes and artisan crafting.

Both with significant individual damage. One with a loss to the rim the other with a loss to the dragon’s snout!

Still a gorgeous pair of Japanese art pottery.
