Fabulous Vintage Mid Century Portmeirion Golden Treacle Glaze Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl in the Iconic 1960s Totem Pattern Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis
I am continuing my effort to downsize as unfortunately we will have to move all our belongings into temporary storage due to builders carrying out major remediation works to our brand new home.
I’m trying to minimize the pain by reducing the amount of packing required to be done!
I’ve quite a few eclectic items of décor which I am not currently displaying, due to colour scheme changes, space issue etc. They still bring me joy, and I probably would use them in future again, but something needs to go!!!
Latest on the chopping block is a number of small green ceramic items from makers such as Celtic Fine Irish Earthenware and Portmeirion, such as these items.
For Sale here is a Fabulous Vintage Mid Century Portmeirion Golden Treacle Glaze Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl in the Iconic 1960’s Totem Pattern Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis
I have lusted after a full Coffee Set in this fabulous pattern, and have picked up bits of the pattern as and when I have come across them, in the hope of building a full set. But as I cannot keep everything, I am willing to let my collected bits go now. I have this jug and sugar bowl in the golden treacle glaze two coffee cups in the green glaze (see my other ads).
The milk jug is tall and slim with a distinctive shaped handle and spout and four rows of raised relief patterns. The sugar bowl is a short cylindrical shape with size larger versions of the raised relief patterns around the lateral face of the bowl. The golden treacle glaze highlights these relief patterns beautifully.
The milk jug stands 4 inches/ 10 cm tall, and the sugar bowl stands just under 2.5 inches/6 cm tall. Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition, for items about 60 years old, with no chips cracks and just minor age related crazing.
Portmeirion Totem is a design which defined the sixties. Like the Lava Lamp and G-Plan Fresco, it is a must-have product for any serious retro fan! Like Denby Arabesque designed by Gill Pemberton at the same time, it was a revolutionary design and created a sensation, as there was nothing else like it!
Susan William-Ellis combined the 'Cylinder' shape (derived from moulds used for medical ceramics previously) with patterns derived from native American Indian cultural art in a raised relief. The glazing process highlighted the raised patterns in a startling way. It was this marriage of a modern shape with patterns from traditional culture that proved so successful. Portmeirion Pottery, with its iconic and modern silhouette and primitive art decoration, captured the mode of the sixties perfectly. Portmeirion's proprietor and designer, Susan Williams-Ellis, brought new ideas to the world of ceramics. Her most successful design from the sixties, Totem, combined a modern shape with patterns rooted in ancient cultures. It was the prefect set to bring out at the end of a sixties' dinner party.
I will have the other golden treacle glaze ceramics available shortly, see the last couple of photos to see what I will have. It includes more Celtic Kilrush Ceramics in similar glaze colours.
