Fabulous Vintage Masons Ironstone Lidded Two Handled Round Shaped Tureen or Vegetable Dish in the Regency Pattern - Unusual Shaped Piece, Circa 1940
I am continuing my effort to downsize, as I unfortunately have to replace the engine in the family car! I'm making progress but more items need to go!
For sale here is a Fabulous Vintage Masons Ironstone Lidded Two Handled Round Shaped Tureen or Vegetable Dish in the Regency Pattern – Unusual Shaped Piece
This is a lovely fresh floral pattern and less fussy than some of the Masons patterns. The transfer print is a bright blue with blue, yellow, green and red hand painted elements. This pattern was also sold under the name ‘Plantation Colonial’ for the US and Canadian markets.
Mason’s were a family of potters trading from circa 1800 to circa 1854, where they were taken over by Messrs. G L Ashworth & Bros in 1861 (they continued to use the Mason’s printed marks and also their molds and patterns). It became part of the Wedgwood group in 1978 and continued until production ceased in 1997.
Charles James Mason patented Ironstone in 1813, making the company a fortune. Ironstone was developed as a cheaper, mass-produced and more durable alternative to porcelain.
This lovely piece is in good vintage condition, with cracks or pattern loss but it does have some discoloured age-related crazing on the inside from use, and this is also visible on the foot of the piece. There is a small chip to the handle, which could be easily disguised, but I have left that for the next owner. The age-related crazing and small chip are taken into account when pricing.
One of these on Replacements.com would cost $149.95 plus post & packing, so a fair price is being asked here!
It stands just under 5 inches/13 cm tall and about 9 inches/23 cm from handle to handle.
The back stamps read MASON’S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA “Regency” ENGLAND, with a crown and banner and the registered number: C 4475 821349 and “Guaranteed Detergent Proof & Acid Resisting Colours”. The backstamps are a bit of a minefield, but according to my research the backstamp dates the piece to post 1940 and pre 1950.
A lovely replacement item for a collector who is short of serving items, or a well-priced gift for the Mason’s lover! Looks fabulous on display on a kitchen dresser, which is where I have had this standing pride of place.
I'll have other Masons Regency items coming shortly. I will have other sized dinner service plates available in set of six, if you are building a dinner service. And some more unusual items too.
