Fabulous Set of Six Mid Century Modern Alfred Meakin Teaset Trios "Gay Fantasy" Pattern from the 1950's
My Covid Clearout continues again this weekend and now I have some extra dinnerware for sale....
For sale here is a fabulous set of six Mid Century Modern Alfred Meakin Teaset Trios (cup, saucer, tea plate) in a fab retro pattern called "Gay Fantasy" which is a perfect example of mid century 1950's design.
Alfred Meakin Ltd was set up in 1875 and operated from the Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate Potteries in Tunstall. Alfred Meakin was the brother of James and George Meakin who ran a large pottery company in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. The company operated until 1976.
The backstamps on these plates dates to 1945 to 1959, so they are true 1950's pieces.
The pattern is just fab, featuring graphic images of patterned leaves ( very Orla Kiely-esque!), a very stylish 1950's design which works just as well in the 21st century!
The six trios are in overall good vintage condition considering they are roughly 70 years old, with no cracks, or pattern loss. There is some gilt loss and there is some minimal age-related crazing. Two cups have tiny flea-bite chips as photographed, and mentioned for accuracy and reflected in the pricing. I am including some spare tea plates and saucers with the purchase!
The cups and saucers are average sized and the tea plates measure 6.75 inches/ 17.5 cm in diameter.
Perfect for everyday or special occasion use, and would be fabulous on display also.
Perfect in a retro MCM interior but perfect also in a modern decor.
