Fabulous Set of Five Mason's Ironstone Blue Vista 8 Inch Salad Plates in Excellent Vintage Condition, Circa 1950
I am almost at the end of my effort to downsize, not many items left to list! But I have to clear a few more random bits that I no longer have room to have on display.
For sale here is A Fabulous Set of Five Mason’s Ironstone Blue Vista 8 Inch Salad Plates in Excellent Vintage Condition, Circa 1950
Mason’s were a family of potters trading from circa 1800 to circa 1854, where they were taken over by Messrs. G L Ashworth & Bros in 1861 (they continued to use the Mason’s printed marks and also their molds and patterns). It became part of the Wedgwood group in 1978 and continued until production ceased in 1997.
Charles James Mason patented Ironstone in 1813, making the company a fortune. Ironstone was developed as a cheaper, mass-produced and more durable alternative to porcelain.
The Blue Vista Pattern features a country scene with a castle like building in a clearing surrounded by trees. There are people on a built terrace in the foreground with a large roman type urn.
The outer section of the scalloped edged plates have a relief rope edge which is further enhanced by a wide garland of vine leaves around the central motif. The Blue is a really lovely vibrant shade, and there is a lovely balance between the blue and white areas in the overall design.
These plates feature the following on the blue backstamp: Mason's" arched over a crown on a tablecloth banner with the words "Patent Ironstone" followed by "Vista England." Permanent Detergent Proof Decoration. This mark was used by Mason's circa the 1950s according to my research.
These Salad Plates measure just shy of 8 inches/ 20 cm in diameter.
All five plates are in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, chips, crazing or pattern loss.
Priced and selling as a set of Five, to separate them would be more expensive individually, but I can do so if required. I do have a sixth plate with damage (a large crack) which I will include for free if wanted, (see the 2nd and 3rd last photos).
A single salad plate on Replacements.com would set you back $23.99 plus shipping and customs, (see the last photo) so there is good value to be had here!
These are perfect for special occasion use, or on display as part of a Blue and White themed wall of plates or kitchen dresser.
I do have other Mason’s Items available already but no more Blue Vista. I do have a stunning large Pink Vista Pitcher, and various Mason’s regency items.
