Fabulous Art Deco Green Pressed Glass Centrepiece Vase with Turnover Rim by Davidson Glass, Pattern Number 1910BD, Circa 1925
I am continuing my effort to downsize, it seems to be never-ending! I purchased quite a number of green glass items for an event and I no longer need them or have room to store them, so I will have to let them go.
For sale here is a Fabulous Art Deco Green Pressed Glass Centrepiece Vase with Turnover Rim by Davidson Glass, Pattern Number 1910BD, Circa 1925
The George Davidson & Co. Teams Glass Works was one of the longest running glass works in the North East of England. It was founded in 1867 and finally closed in 1987 after several changes of ownership. From the Davidson Glass Company came world famous glassware such as Pearline, Cloud Glass, Jade, Chippendale and Jacobean. The same mould designs were used by Davidson's for all their colours during this period. Jade Glass, black opaque glass, and several colours of clear glass, as well as all the colours of Cloud Glass were made in these same shapes. Every type of glassware produced in the Teams glass works has its own band of avid and knowledgeable collectors. Davidson glass is admired and collected all over the world. Ask any collector of pressed glass who were the great innovators in glass making and George Davidson and his son Thomas will be close to the top of the list if not actually at the top.
The green glass centrepiece serving bowl or dish stands 3.5 inches/ 9 cm tall and measures 12 inches/ 30 m in length by 6.75 inches/ 17 cm in width. It is Pattern Number 1910BD, from the 1910 suite of designs.
The 1910 suite of glassware was in production from 1910 and although introduced in 1910, the design is based around a 1909 Registered design No 549518.
The distinguishing feature of the 1910 suit is the ribs rising from the base which end in a toothed decorative band which runs around the outside of the article and flows into the ribs. This feature is hidden in many of the flower bowls as the rim is turned down, although it’s not hidden in this example as the glass is transparent, not opaque like many examples.
The 1910 suite was made in the full range of glassware - salts, creams, sugars, salad bowls, plates, celeries and flower sets. Only the flower sets and a few odd pieces were made in Cloud Glass. The flower sets such as the 1910BD for sale here, were not introduced by Davidson until about 1925.
This large bowl which was originally part of a two piece flower set (with a 4” Flower Frog, which is missing) is in excellent vintage (almost antique!) condition with no chips or cracks. Examples such as this have sold for €34 online, ex post/packaging/customs, so this one is good value.
A fabulous Art Deco piece for the discerning homeowner. It would make a lovely display with small fruits or berries/nuts. Or of course, always suitable as a serving dish. If it was matched up with a suitable green glass flower frog, it could be once again used for its original purpose as a flower set.
