CHELSEA PENSIONER (Royal Hospital) - a vintage toby jug by Crown Devon (late 1960's). Excellent condition.

For sale is a vintage toby jug of a Chelsea Pension made by Fielding & Company Ltd (Crown Devon) of Stoke-on-Trent. This toby shows a uniformed Chelsea Pension seated, holding a tankard of ale and wearing his RH (Royal Hospital) hat. The Royal Hospital of Chelsea remains the original 'Old Soldier's' retirement and nursing home for veterans of the British Army.

Fielding & Company Ltd was established in 1873 by Simon Fielding and from 1905 the name Crown Devon became Fielding's trademark. In 1964 the company purchased Shorter & Son Ltd, who themselves were prolific manufacturers of toby and characters jugs. Fielding & Company made use of the Shorter's moulds and this toby jug was produced using one of their moulds and which still carries the Shorter jug's name "Chelsea Pensioner". The Crown Devon name continued until the company closed down in 1982.

DESCRIPTION:
Size: about 6 3/8" height (162mm).
Finish: hand-painted in various colours.
Material(s): slip-cast white earthenware.
Imprint: CROWN DEVON - MADE IN ENGLAND. Also the jug's title CHELSEA PENSIONER and M/S impressed into the base. The M/S may refer to the jug's size as Shorter & Son made this toby in four sizes from 9" down to 2" in height. A painter's mark P is also present.
Weight (excluding transit packaging): about 600g
Approximate age: c.1965 to early 1970's.

CONDITION:
Excellent condition overall. No damage.
