For sale are two vintage toby/character porcelain jugs that were originally made and sold as tourist ware for those visiting Ballycastle in County Antrim, Northern Ireland or Wales. The "From Ballycastle" jug features John Bull, a personification of England and the other a Welsh lady in her traditonal costume.

These jugs were fully hand-made at all stages of production from moulding, hand-painting and to their final firing in the kiln. They are unusual in that both are made from a porcelain-like material as opposed to a white earthenware from which most character/toby jugs were generally made (porcelain is translucent to light whereas earthenware is fully opaque). It is therefore likely both these jugs were made by one of the manufacturers of crested (heraldic) china tourist wares which were popular from 1910's through to the late 1920's. Despite the lack of maker's marks, it is possible that both these souvenir wares could have been made by Birks Rawlins & Company of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire? Both jugs have minor damage and this is reflected in their sale prices.
