For sale is a finely-made vintage miniature character toby jug by the Artone pottery company of Staffordshire. This hand-painted thimble-sized jug features Captain 'Ned' Cuttle, a character from the Charles Dickens novel 'Dombey & Son'. Captain Cuttle was a popular subject for character toby jugs by different English pottery companies over the decades.

The Artone pottery company of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire was established in 1946 by brothers George and Jack Lawton, along with their wives Irene and Frances. They had previously trained and worked at the Doulton pottery company.Artone was bought over in 1979 and their name discontinued.

Size: about 1 5/16" height (34mm).
Finish: hand-painted in various colours.
