For sale is a vintage finely-made character jug by John Shaw & Sons Ltd (Burlington Ware) of Tunstall in Stoke-on-Trent. This toby jug is titled CAVALIER and is the large sized version measuring around 6.75" in height.
All Shaw & Sons' toby and character jugs are hand-made at every stage of the process from moulding to hand-painting and firing, each one going through three different firing stages in the kiln.
John Shaw & Sons Ltd pottery company was established in 1931 and operated at the Willow Works until they closed in 1963. They produced a wide range of earthenware and fine bone-china tableware and then from the late 1950's until 1963 they also produced a range of toby and character jugs. Burlington Ware was the company's tradename which they put onto their products. The mark used on this Cavalier toby jug was in use from 1959 to 1963.
