Beautiful Masons Ironstone Lidded Two Handled Oval Tureen/Vegetable Dish in the Regency Pattern Circa 1940 to 1950, Some Discoloured Age-Related Crazing Inside and Out, Priced Accordingly

I am continuing my effort to downsize as unfortunately we will have to move all our belongings into temporary storage due to builders carrying out major remediation works to our brand new home.

I’m trying to minimize the pain by reducing the amount of packing required to be done and reducing the amount of items going into storage.

A beautiful piece of Masons pottery in their popular and collectable "Regency" pattern.

This is a lovely fresh floral pattern and less fussy than some of the Masons patterns. The transfer print is a bright blue with blue, yellow, green and red hand painted elements. This pattern was also sold under the name ‘Plantation Colonial’ for the US and Canadian markets.

Mason’s were a family of potters trading from circa 1800 to circa 1854, where they were taken over by Messrs. G L Ashworth & Bros in 1861 (they continued to use the Mason’s printed marks and also their molds and patterns). It became part of the Wedgwood group in 1978 and continued until production ceased in 1997.
Charles James Mason patented Ironstone in 1813, making the company a fortune. Ironstone was developed as a cheaper, mass-produced and more durable alternative to porcelain.

For sale here is a beautiful Lidded Two Handled Oval Tureen or Vegetable Dish in good vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, or pattern loss but some discoloured Age-Related crazing inside and out, as photographed. The age-related crazing is taken into account when pricing.

It stands just under 6 inches/15 cm tall and about 11 inches/26 cm from handle to handle.

The back stamp reads MASON’S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA “Regency” ENGLAND, with a crown and banner and the registered number: C 4475 821349 in Gt. Britain and “Guaranteed Permanent & Acid Resisting Colours”. The backstamps are a bit of a minefield, but according to my research the backstamp dates the piece to post 1940 and pre 1950.

A lovely replacement item for a collector who is short of serving items for display, or a well-priced gift for the Mason’s lover! Looks fabulous on display on a kitchen dresser, which is where I have had this standing pride of place until we moved house.
I was planning on using this to plant up some succulents or cacti, but I’m just not going to get around to it now!
