Beautiful 21 Piece (including Teapot) "Harlequin" Collection of Woodsware Utilityware in the Three Colourways, Beryl, Jasmine and Iris
A possible impending house move has forced me into evaluating all the contents of my attic and some items will have to go, in my effort to downsize. I'm making progress but more items need to go!
This is a Beautiful 21 Piece Collection of Woodsware Utilityware including a Teapot, that I have collected over the years and have displayed as a "Harlequin" set, mixing and matching the yellow, (Jasmine) green, (Beryl) and blue (Iris) utilityware colourways produced by Wood & Sons
They would look amazing on display in a country kitchen dresser but is also perfect for everyday use. These have been lightly used, but this type of utilityware is so durable, that they look practically brand new, although they date from the 1940's onwards.
This type of utilityware was produced by Wood & Sons from the 1940's onwards for decades. Due to the wartime restrictions on colour pigments and patterns, Wood and Sons relied on clean shapes and ribbed bands, very much Art Deco in style, to create an appealing economic utilityware that could be mass produced. It is insterstingly very similar to the US Fiestaware in its design elements, although the colours are more subdued and did not change through the years - Perhaps they missed a trick there!!!
I always thought they should at least had a pink colourway to complete the set ( similar to Carrigaline quartet of utilityware colourways!)
It was especially popular in the 1940's and into the 1950's, when more pattern started again to be reintroduced following the ending of wartime restrictions. Green is the most popular, and is called Beryl ware. It is very much a pastel '1930s' green, The primrose yellow is called Jasmine and is the second most popular colour-way. Finally, Iris is a deep cornflower blue colour, which is more rare to find than the other two colours.
Included in this mix and match "Harlequin" set are:
6 cups (Two Beryl, Two Jasmine, Two Iris)
6 saucers (Two Beryl, Two Jasmine, Two Iris)
6 side plates (Two Beryl, Two Jasmine, Two Iris)
Sugar Bowl (Beryl)
Milk Jug (Blue Utilityware, not Woodsware but good Match)
Teapot (Iris, but a paler older colour than the Iris trios)
Perfect for everyday use and display, they would also look great among a collection of other Utilityware and stripeware.
All items are in very good vintage condition with no chips and no cracks. Some pieces have minor age related crazing, but only to be expected with the age of these pieces. The jug has a nibble on the rim and the teapot has been well used with crazing especially on the lid and a small imperfections on the rim as photographed.
All pieces have either the impressed or printed Woodsware marks.
I have other Woodsware and Carrigaline Utilityware that I will be listing shortly as I am downsizing my collections due to space restrictions and a possible house move!!
