Antique Japanese Satsuma Vase 24cm, Hand Painted, Meiji Style, Fine Crackle Glaze
Beautiful antique Japanese Satsuma-style vase, approximately 24cm tall.
A particularly fine and striking piece, with a finely crackled cream ground and extensive hand-painted decoration depicting traditional Japanese figures in richly patterned robes.
The vase has wonderful detail throughout, including intricate geometric borders, gilt decoration and raised enamel work with tiny coloured and white dots giving the surface beautiful texture and depth.
The ceramic body itself is remarkably finely potted. When held towards strong sunlight, the light can actually glow through the body of the vase, which I have tried to capture in one of the photographs.
Elegant tall baluster shape with a gently flared rim. It displays beautifully from every angle.
The base is unmarked. The style, decoration and construction are consistent with Japanese Satsuma export ware associated with the late Meiji / early 20th-century period, although as the vase is unsigned I cannot guarantee an exact date or maker.
I have found a remarkably similar example being offered by a specialist antiques dealer for €150.
Height: approx. 24cm
Excellent antique condition with no chips or obvious structural cracks noted. Fine overall crackle/crazing to the glaze is consistent with this type of ware and its age. Please see photographs for full condition and detail.
A beautiful decorative piece in its own right and an interesting piece for a collector of Japanese ceramics, Satsuma ware, Asian antiques or Meiji-period decorative art.
