Available here is an Amazing Set of Six Antique Hand-Blown Bristol Green Sherry Glasses, Stunning Teal Green Bowls with Clear Stems, circa 1890, Capacity 80mls
These fabulous antique glasses certainly unusual and are all hand blown with the resultant slight variations in size, shape, and colour. They are a lovely shape, like very small wine glasses, and are a stunning shade of teal green glass. They are late Victorian to Edwardian, dating to circa 1890 and are hand blown in Bristol. Bristol is famous for its blue glass, but also made this fabulous teal colour, known as Bristol Green.
Bristol Glass gets its name from the region it was made: Bristol, United Kingdom. Located right on the western coast of Britain, Bristol was a perfect location for glassmakers wishing to export their goods to British Colonies in the 18th and 19th centuries. Near the peak of its glass production, Bristol had an estimated 60 different glassmakers. In 1746, British Parliament made a new tax on clear glass, but not opaque or coloured glass and Bristol became famous for its opaque milk glass, blue glass and green glass. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, glassmakers used cobalt oxide in their furnaces to make the glassware blue. This type of glassware was expensive and thus was found mostly in wealthier households. Chromium oxides were used to produce the Bristol Green, and this colourway is rarer than the Bristol Blue
All six are in excellent Antique condition especially considering they are over 130 years old, with no chips or cracks. Two glasses are a slightly different shade of green to the other four. This is due to the fact that they are hand blown, and there are slight variations in size and shape also and have some little inclusions and bubbles.
They stand just under 5 inches/12.5cm tall and the diameter is 2 inches/5cm, see the photos. The capacity is 80ml. They would probably have been wine glasses when they were produced (as wine glasses were much smaller in Victorian times). But probably more accurately classed as sherry glasses now, given the size and capacity.
Apart from using for some sort of liqueur, these glasses are fabulous just on display.
Due to their attractive colour, great age and rarity, Bristol Green Glasses command a premium online.
Single glasses range from about €15 to €45. Incomplete sets of three or four glasses can go for between €50 and €170 depending on the vendor. See the photos of some currently listed on Etsy.
I have some other glassware of various vintages listed, see the final photo, and keep an eye out for my other ads!
