Amazing and Rare Arklow Pottery-Avoca Ware in Pattern Number 878, From the Very Early Days of Arklow Potterys Production, Circa 1936, Mixed Used Condition, Display Only
I am almost at the end of my effort to downsize, not many items left to list! But I have to clear a few more random bits that I no longer have room to have on display, including some Arklow Pottery
This is a chance to own a part set of one of the oldest sets of Arklow Pottery, the Irish pottery firm set up in 1935.
For Sale here is a Part Dinner Service By Arklow Pottery/Avoca Ware in Pattern Number 878, From the Very Early Days of Arklow Pottery’s Production, Circa 1936, Mixed Used Condition, Display Only
The pattern is a lovely black, red, green and rust imari-style pattern identified by the pattern number 878, and featuring red lotus flowers. The backstamps on this set are a mixture of the Avoca Ware stamp (thought to be the very earliest Arklow Pottery Stamp from the first couple of years of production) and an unusual early Arklow Ware Ireland Stamp featuring a shamrock. Possibly the set was built up over a couple of years, or the two stamps were interchangeable at the time during the mid to late 30’s.
Included in this part dinner service are the following items:
Five Dinner Plates,
Five Breakfast Plates,
Six Salad/Dessert Plates
Gravy Boat
Lidded Tureen
Large Platter
This set has had a long life and has been well loved and well used! For this reason, the set is categorised as having mixed used condition and suitable for display only!
Mind you, as you can see from the photos, it makes a lovely rustic, shabby chic display on a mid-sized kitchen dresser!
The Platter is well used and has an ancient stable crack and discoloured crazing from use in an aga or similar, I would imagine. Overall crazing also present. Please see the photos.
The Tureen has a repaired crack to the rim as photographed, although this is hidden from view when the lid is on. Crazing also present.
The gravy boat has gravy coloured crazing and discolouration on the inside from years of use, and crazing on the outside, see photos.
Most of the plates have some degree of clean crazing, with a few having some discolouration too.
The dinner plates have the most and the smallest plates are the cleanest and almost completely crazing-free.
When the set is displayed as photographed, the least amount of damage/crazing is visible.
This set is a rare example of a very early Arklow Pottery Dinner Service in a very rare pattern. Your chance to own a part set of early AP, when would you see such a rare set again!
Priced as a part set, with the condition taken into account when pricing.
The age, rarity of the pattern and the unusual backstamps were also considered when pricing.
I do not wish to break up the set.
