For sale is a vintage standing toby jug made by Shorter & Son Ltd of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. This toby figure wears a tricorn hat decorated with bunches of grapes, vine leaves and stands at 10 3/4" (27cm) in height.
Shorter & Son Ltd (1874-1964) was established by Arthur Shorter in 1874 and in 1894 purchased Wilkinson Pottery. Shorter & Sons became a limited company in 1933 and remained successful into the post-war period. By the early 1960's, increasing foreign competition and changing public tastes took its toll on the company success and in 1964 merged with Fielding Pottery.
