If you check the second picture you can see a normal head mounted via a 3/8-16 thread to 16mm (5/8") adapter to a piece of aluminium rod that passes through the #171. This is a home-made (and cheaper) hide-clamp that doesn't require that you dismantle your tripod.
A great way of setting up a camera for the likes of bird-feeders on windows. Takes up less room than a tripod.
