'Compulsively readable' TRIBUNE
The victory parade of 6 October 1981 was to have marked Anwar Sadat's return to total control over all the factions of his troubled country. Instead, a shocking and devastatingly accurate outburst of violence left Sadat and seven others dead. Egypt had lost the man who had led them to glory in 1973, and the West was left wondering why a man held in such high international regard should be so hated by his own people.

In AUTUMN OF FURY, Mohamed Heikal, one of Egypt's best known journalists, describes the growing religious and political opposition to Sadat and his policies which culminated not in the celebration of victory, but in the bloody events of 6 October.
