The author played Gaelic Football for Dublin and had joined a strong team, played well, but got injuries and wrecked his personal life.
He explains when life started going downhill he didn't tell anyone. He had grown up near St Brendan's Hospital for the mentally ill (northside Dublin), his father was a psychiatric nurse there. Summer was spent down the country with relatives, a familiar story as Dublin was dirty with coal fumes and families thought rural air was healthier. The kids helped with harvests and turf cutting. After one or two jobs he decided to train as a psychiatric nurse too. Football had been his lifelong ambition and while others around him took drugs, he didn't think anything could be better than sport.
With life breaking down and his marriage wrecked, he did not tell a counsellor how bleak he was feeling and went into depression. Only later when he spoke about it did the feeling lift. He looks at why men feel under pressure to be strong, to fix everything, to keep going.
The football years are detailed, and he discusses new studies on training methods and diets. He contrasts older routines of long runs to build stamina, which maybe just sapped the players' energy when they needed to run in short bursts on the pitch. Anyone looking for work in sports science and sports physio or coaching will be interested. We can see that if you want to be in sports you need a fallback job when you retire.
