Cagliostro was an Italian man of many parts born in Palermo in 1743. Basically a rogue, he was a thief, a charlatan, a fake medium and mystic, a forger. A friend of princes he hit the big time when he delved into Freemasonry in London in 1777 and assumed the name Count Cagliostro, and together with his wife took the courts of Europe by storm. However he found himself flung into the Bastille having been unjustly implicated in the case of the Queens Necklace. He was arrested by the Inquisition tortured and imprisoned for heresy.
Cormac o Culeanain is a professor author and translator. He was Head of Italian in TCD for many years, writes crime novels under the name Cormac Millar. Son of Eilis Dillon and former chair of the Irish Writers Centre.
