The Adler inaugurated the German railway on December 7, 1835: six kilometers from Nuremberg to Fürth in nine minutes. The locomotive came from Newcastle — disassembled, by ship and cart, a two-month journey — and with it came its engineer, William Wilson, who was supposed to return to England after training the Germans. He fell in love with a Nuremberg woman and stayed for life. The original was scrapped; its 1935 replica is still steaming in Nuremberg.
